Install Wallpaper – DIY
The latest trend in decorating home sis – wallpaper. It a great way to give your home a striking look.
With unbelievable patterns, colours and designs, wallpapers are a big hit. And you know what, they are very easy to install. You actually do not need a professional to install a wallpaper on your wall.
Let’s take a quick look at the steps:
Prepare your wall :
Remove all the nails, screws or hooks from the wall. Cover all the outlets. If you have an old paper, then scrape it off and clean the wall thoroughly and remove all the dirt and mildew out. Apply a layer of putty, this will even out the surface covering all cracks and holes. Now use a sandpaper and smoothen out the surface.
Measure the wall:
Measure the area (wall) precisely. While measuring, mark 20cm extra on the paper for leeway at the top or bottom of the wall. Also this can cover the incorrect measurement. Unroll the paper and make markings for cutting. Now cut off first strip.
Paste the first strip:
Spread a layer of glue on the wall and one thin layer on the back of the paper. Now gently paste the first strip. Starting from the top coming to the bottom. Smooth out the surface with wallpaper brush or cloth. Leave the 20 cm loose at the top or at the bottom.
Now the second strip:
Now this will be tricky. You have to match the pattern and design according to the first strip. Wallpapers come with pattern sequence so it will be easy to match them. Don’t let the paper to overlap, you can smooth out the seam with a seam roller.
Tricky areas:
Cut off the loose extra part of the paper with a pair of scissors. Press the corner and seam nicely. For tricky areas like switch board, plugs, just lay the paper on them but do not press. Use a cutter or scissors to cut off that part of paper and then press the sides nicely. Extra paper can be cut off later when the paper is set.
Common mistakes:
Trapped bubbles
If you see bubbles just smoothen the surface with paper brush or cloth and move towards bottom, side or upwards.
Peeling edges:
If the surface is rough, the paper might peel off. Lift the area and smooth it with sandpaper. And then put a layer of glue and then apply the paper and smooth out.
Cutting away too much paper:
This happens most of the time with beginners. Just place the cut off part again and paste it with the glue.
Curled seam:
The edges of the paper might curl up if there is less glue applied. Simply apply more glue to that area and paste again. Do not put access glue.
