How to measure wallpapers?

Covering your walls with a wallpaper of your choice is a task and the tougher part is measuring the wallpaper. It needs techniques and correct knowledge. Ultrawalls will give you tips on measuring wallpapers for your walls correctly.

When you ordering the wallpaper make sure you are ordering the correct amount. Every design is different. Wallpapers with bigger patterns tend to have more wastage, so make sure to calculate the wallpaper correctly.

How to Measure for Wallpaper

Measuring your rooms for wallpaper can seem daunting, but by getting your math right and making sure you order enough, you can easily modernize your home by putting up wallpaper yourself.

Measuring your Rooms

  • Get the height and width of the room by measuring from ceiling to down. Use a metal tape for accurate measurement. Do double check the measurement.
  • Now, multiply the width and height of each wall to get the measurement in square foot. As you will be ordering the wallpaper in square foot.
  • For example: if your wall is 5 feet (1.5 m) x 7 feet (2.1 m), multiply those numbers to get 35 square feet (3.3 m2).
  • Add the total square footage of each wall to get the square footage of the room. Getting the square footage of each room is important.
  • For example, if you have 3 walls in a room that are all 35 square feet (3.3 m2),add 35 square feet (3.3 m2) + 35 square feet (3.3 m2) + 35 square feet (3.3 m2) to get 105 square feet (9.8 m2) for the whole room.
  • Subtract any Doors, windows, and cabinets from your calculations. Any areas that you won’t be wallpapering can be taken away from your final square footage count. These calculations do not have to be exact and can be done quickly since they are just to help you avoid over-ordering large amounts of wallpaper.

Ordering wallpaper

Calculate how many rolls of wallpaper you will need. A roll of wallpaper usually covers between 25 square feet (2.3 m2) and 36 square feet (3.3 m2). You can calculate how many rolls you will need by finding the exact amount of square footage your wallpaper roll will cover.

For example: If your room is 50 square feet (4.6 m2), and your wallpaper roll has 25 square feet (2.3 m2) of usable paper, you will need 3 rolls of wallpaper to cover your entire room and to have some extra left over.
